Snake's back

Do you ever think back to your first ever mobile phone? Technology has come on a long way since then, and so has the class of entertainment our phones can offer.

Back in 1997, the likes of Netflix or Spotify were of the stuff of fantasy, but we did have one thing to pass the time, and that was Snake. Now that retro gaming revolution is making a comeback with Snake Rewind.

Availability

iOS, Android, Windows Phone

What does it do?

The biggest difference between this reboot of Snake and the original is that we no longer have the T9 keyboard (standard, physical numbered keys) to control which direction the snake turns. Instead you have to either tap or swipe across the screen.

There’s also a bunch of new items to collect, which can help boost your points quicker. The magnet, for example, attracts items near you so you don’t have to collect each one individually.

If you crash into yourself or the walls, you can either give up, or rewind a number of steps. This costs you points, but at least it’s not game over immediately.

What did we like?

Above all - the nostalgia. But, it was a bonus to find out that the app’s made by the same bloke that created the original Snake – Taneli Armando.

It’s also nice to see that the developers haven’ over-engineered the snake. He (or she) is still very much a slowly growing block, but there have been some nice touches with 3D effects. When approaching the ‘fruit’, it’s as if the snake is wearing a headlamp, as shadows quickly grow behind the objects as you get closer.

What could be better?

The tapping and swiping controls aren’t very good. You might be tootling along, eating loads of fruit, minding your own business, and then all of a sudden you’ve crashed into your own body – not as you instructed.

Other than this setback, however, it’s equally as addictive as it was back in the day – if not more.

Our verdict

Snake Rewind is so basic, but sometimes we need basic. And, as you all know what Snake is, you’re never going to be disappointed. If anything, this refreshed app can be one of those things you show your mates from way back when, which will undoubtedly lead to some fond reminiscing.

Cheers, Snake Rewind. Thanks for the memories.
