Do you speak emoji?

A picture speaks a thousand words

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, or have never been in contact with one of those young people, you will have likely come across the world of emoji.

If not, allow us to fill you in. Emojis are small cartoons, which can be included in text messages to help illustrate what someone is saying. Not to be confused with popular acronyms, which are also used as a form if communication. Emojis also aren’t emoticons – although they’re quite similar.

Emoticons are kind of like a primitive emojis – faces made up letters, numbers and symbols, kind of like: :) (smiling face) :P (cheeky face) :D (open-mouth grin face) :S (confused face).

The language of emoji

So, how well do you understand the language of emoji? Can you tell what Katy Perry is going on about in this WhatsApp conversation with her mates, Markus, Mamma Mia and Logan?

Translation

I let you push me past the breaking point,
I stood for nothing,
So I fell for everything…

The rising power of the emoji

Today we’ve seen emoji’s power rise even further, now allowing us to order real food. And, not just any old food either - Dominos pizza, no less.

The company will allow pizza lovers to order their favourite pie by using pizza slice emojis on Twitter, as of 20 May. Online accounts will be linked to users’ Twitter accounts meaning that Dominos staff will be able to make sense of the order.

Patrick Doyle, Domino's CEO told USA Today: "It's the epitome of convenience … we've got this down to a five-second exchange."

Unfortunately the service is only available in the US for now, but hopefully we can look forward to some emoji/pizza action soon.
