Best movie reboots of all time

"Mad" Max Rockatansky is back in action on 14 May, so let's talk about the best movie reboots ever.
Best movie reboots of all time

This week we’re set to see the return of Mad Max which started life 1979 and quickly became a cult sensation. In the 2015 reboot we’ll see the return of original director, George Miller, and Max Rockatansky revived by Tom Hardy (originally played by Mel Gibson).

The year is 2060, and a major energy crisis has left Australia in disarray – now a civilisation without law and order. A woman called Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron) needs help crossing the desert kingdom, which is ruled by King Immortan Joe and his band of merry men, the War Boys. Nobody knows the desert like Max, but even he has reservations about entering the post-apocalyptic battleground.

Set to be one of the most intense films ever created, Mad Max: Fury Road will hit UK cinemas this Thursday (14 May).

But which other cinematic reboots have had us gripped from the opening credits? Here are our top picks, all available from your favourite app store.

Chris Nolan’s Batman (2005 – 12)

Many actors have donned the black mask over time, but Nolan’s gritty revision of Gotham is up there with the best. Starring Christian Bale as the caped crusader, and the late great Health Ledger as the Joker, it’s a must see for any superhero fans.

J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars (coming Dec 2015)

Setting aside that woeful trilogy starring Hayden Christensen and Jar Jar Binks, this December we’re set for something really special with a new intergalactic instalment, directed by J.J. Abrams. With an all-star returning cast including Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill, we can’t wait for this.

Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes (2009 – 11)

Robert Downey Jr. brings infamous detective, Sherlock Holmes back to life with a little support from Jude Law as John Watson. Ritchie’s more action-focused direction led to a darker revision of the franchise, resulting in major box office successes.

Colin Trevorrow’s Jurassic World (coming June 2015)

22 years after the events in Spielberg’s Jurassic Park, Chris Pratt and a viciousness of velociraptors (uncertain of collcective noun - answers on a postcard) are out to stop a new species of dinosaur reeking havoc on the new theme park, Jurassic World. It’s going to be a good summer.

Wyatt and Reeves’ Planet of the Apes (2011 – 14)

It’s been a long time since Charlton Heston famously cried, “get your stinkin’ paws off me, you damn dirty ape!” but excusing Tim Burton’s 2001 effort (because let’s be honest, it was rubbish), the franchise is back in action.

In 2011 we saw how the ape uprising began, and the story continued last year with the humans being forced out of their sanctuary by the apes. The next chapter is due in 2017 – currently untitled.

The flops

Unfortunately, there are some stories that we didn’t need retelling. Jaden Smith as The Karate Kid, for example - has the world gone completely mad? The 2014 reworking of Godzilla didn’t excite fans either, featuring an American footballer-shaped monster making a big mess in Japan.

And then there are the sequels we really shouldn’t talk about. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull -that actually happened. There was also Terminator Salvation, which had a CGI Arnie show up for a bit. On that note, there’s a fifth Terminator film coming in July – Terminator Genisys. Let’s hope Alan Taylor can do something with Cameron’s once great creation.

We've undoubtedly missed some of the great, so have your say in the comments below.
