Oculus Rift will launch early 2016

The end is in sight

Facebook-owned virtual reality company, Oculus, has revealed it’s much anticipated Rift headset will be released in the first quarter of 2016.

The announcement was made via the company’s blog site today, and it’s clear that Oculus is as excited about it as we are.

“Since the earliest days of the Oculus Kickstarter, the Rift has been shaped by gamers, backers, developers, and enthusiasts around the world. Today, we’re incredibly excited to announce that the Oculus Rift will be shipping to consumers in Q1 2016, with pre-orders later this year.”

In the early days, Oculus held a crowdfunding campaign, as many others have, on Kickstarter. It was hugely successful and went onto generate more than $2.4m (£1.5m) in pre-orders for a prototype. That kind of thing doesn’t tend to go unnoticed, and as a result, Facebook bought the company for $2bn (£1.3bn) in 2014.

The news is going to be a big deal for the video game industry, as it will completely revolutionise the potential level of complete immersion.

The juicy details

In the next few weeks it’s understood that Oculus will be revealing more details surrounding hardware, software and inputs. And, that we can eventually expect something on the shelves that resembles the Crescent Bay prototype (pictured above).

Nate Mitchell, vice president of product at Oculus, made his excitement clear on social media, posting on Twitter that he was "extremely excited" and that Oculus “can’t wait to get it [Rift] in your hands.”

The company rounded off its blog post with a line teasing that there is much more to come in the future: “E3 is just around the corner — this is only the beginning.”
