Making your home smarter

Technology is transforming our homes. The internet of things is connecting everyday devices like fridges and washing machines to the internet, letting you communicate with them when you’re out and about through your mobile phone or smartwatch. Here are a few more of the innovative ways technology can help your home…

LOCKS AND KEYS

Rather than handing out spare sets of keys, get a digital lock like Lockitron. You can send friends and family a digital key through an app, giving you complete control over who can get in and when.

CURTAINS

With app controlled curtains, you can sit by the pool on the other side of the world, and still draw your drapes with just a tap so no one knows you’re away. Check out these power curtains from Z Wave.

FRIDGES

Smart fridges, like this one from LG, will revolutionise your kitchen. It tells you what’s inside, what’s about to expire and even the ingredients you need for a terrific meal. And you can see it all on your smartphone.

LIGHTS

For extra security, lights, like the Philips Hue, can be turned on and off from anywhere. Plus you can create the lighting from your favourite photos to create the perfect atmosphere.

BATHROOM SCALES

Smart bathroom scales, like the Withings Smart Body Analyzer, track your weight, body fat and BMI. It even monitors your heart rate and the air quality to keep you in top shape and send the info to your phone.

HEATING

Smart thermostats can help you save money and the planet by cutting your energy use. The NEST Learning Thermostat automatically creates the most efficient programme for heating your home. It learns when you go to work, when you get home and when you’re on holiday to save energy.
