EE turns on even faster 4G network

EE has launched a new 4G+ mobile network that gives internet speeds eight times faster than the average UK broadband connection.

The new 4G+ network lets you browse the internet at an insanely fast 150Mbps. Regular 4G in London normally runs at around 50Mbps and average broadband speeds are just 18.7Mbps.

Olaf Swantee, CEO of EE, said: “We’ve invested in innovation, driven competition and given people in London a mobile network that’s faster than almost any other in the world, and even faster than most fibre broadband available here.”

EE 4G+ currently covers central London, including areas like Shoreditch, Old Street, Southbank, Soho, Westminster and Kensington. But EE plans to cover the whole of Greater London by June 2015 before rolling it out to Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool and other big cities.

To take advantage of the incredible speeds, you’ll need an LTE-Advanced capable phone and a 4GEE Extra or Corporate 4GEE plan from EE. LTE-Advanced phones are ones that use LTE Cat 6, like Samsung Galaxy Note 4.

But everyone on EE in a 4G+ area should see a speed boost as the new network brings a lot more capacity. EE says it’s like adding extra lanes to a motorway.

According to EE’s CTO, Fotis Karonis, 4G+ is about getting ready for the near future: “We’re making sure that there’s enough speed to let our growing 4GEE customer base do all the amazing things that are just breaking through now – 4K video over 4G, wearable technology, and increasingly sophisticated mobile business apps.”

So what will you use these incredibly fast internet speeds for? 4K video streaming? Online gaming? Let us know in the comments below. Or if you need some ideas, check out what 4G lets you do and then imagine doing it three times faster.
