WhatsApp is now one of the most secure Android messaging apps in the world thanks to a new update that’s brought end-to-end encryption.
End-to-end encryption means your message will be turned into code as soon as you hit send, and can’t be turned back into text until it gets to the person you sent it to. So WhatsApp won’t be able to read your messages, even if the NSA tells them to hand them over.
WhatsApp has more than 600 million users, making it the biggest app to have such a high level of security. But that made it difficult to include the security.
Open Whisper Systems, which helped transform WhatsApp’s security, said it spent six month making its high tech code more streamlined but just as secure so it could work for more than half a billion users at the same time.
When you update WhatsApp to get the new security features, you won’t notice a difference as everything will be encrypted automatically. You’ll just have more peace of mind that no one can hack your messages.
