USB Type-C: One cable to rule them all

We have way too many cables. Most of us have on to charge our phones, a different one to charge our iPad, one to connect our cameras to the computer, one for the mouse, one for the keyboard… and that’s before we get onto the quirky extras that we enjoy.

But soon all of these cables will have the same connector, so you’ll only ever need one – or lots of the same one, but then it won’t matter which you grab from the drawer.

That’s because the USB Type-C standard has almost been finalised. It’s a smaller version of the USB, mini USB and micro USB cables we use every day. And the design has just been published ahead of its final launch.

It has a symmetrical design, so you don’t have to turn the plug over and over as you try to force it into the USB socket.

And as everything will be able to use the tiny new USB Type-C plug, both ends of the cable will be the same so it doesn’t matter which way round you put it.

But USB Type-C won’t just take away the hassle of having loads of different cables; it’ll move data and power faster. That means you’ll be able to put photos on your computer more quickly and charge your phone in no time.

Plus, with the European Union ordering all smartphone makers to use the same type of cable, USB Type-Cwill have to be put on all of our new gadgets.

As the designs for USB Type-C have just been published, we’d expect the makers of our favourite tech to start using it at the end of this year. So hopefully next year’s smartphones will all see faster, simpler cables and ports.
