MWC: LG unveils first 4G smartwatch

LG has just unveiled the gorgeous LG Watch Urbane at MWC, along with this high-end version called the LG Watch Urbane LTE. And it’s the first 4G smartwatch.

The Urbane LTE keeps the sleek metal build of the non-4G version, but has a slightly tweaked design to squeeze in a microphone for voice calls and three physical buttons on the side, instead of one.

The newer smartwatch has extra buttons because it doesn’t run Android Wear, Google’s operating system for wearables. Instead it runs software designed by LG and the three buttons are meant to let you navigate the watch much faster.

As well as being able to connect to 4G mobile networks, the Urbane LTE has GPS and a whole host of sensors that’ll track everything from running to golf. In fact, LG says that if you play golf while wearing the watch, it’ll automatically analyse your swing.

LG’s also managed to squeeze a big battery in the Urbane LTE. The 700mAh power pack is much bigger than the 300-400mAh we’re used to in smartwatches. And there’s a ‘Wear Detection’ feature that automatically turns the screen off when you take the watch off to save power.

The LG Watch Urbane LTE will work with any phone running Android KitKat or newer.

So what do you think? The Urbane LTE is sure to be a bit more expensive than the regular LG Watch Urbane, which is already much more expensive than less stylish smartwatches, but is a great design and 4G connectivity worth the premium price? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below.
