MWC preview: Wearables

Monday marks the start of the Mobile World Congress (MWC), the biggest mobile technology show in the world. And wearables are expected to be one of the biggest things at the event.

But wearables have been making headlines for a few years now, without ever grabbing the public’s attention. So are we finally going to see these innovative gadgets come of age next week?

LG WATCH URBANE

LG, the South Korean technology maker, has already shown off two smartwatches it plans to launch at MWC, and they look like the first smartwatches that we’d happily wear anywhere.

The ultra-stylish LG Watch Urbane has a slim, metal design that lets it sit happily alongside premium timepieces in terms of style. And it packs all the handy features that make smartwatches a convenient gadget to have on your wrist.

The LG Watch Urbane LTE, which is said to be the first 4G smartwatch, tweaks that stunning design slightly so it has room to squeeze in a microphone for calls, a bigger battery and NFC for contactless payments. Yet we think it looks slightly better than the non-4G version.

PEBBLE TIME

LG won’t be alone in refreshing its smartwatch offerings. Pebble, a company credited with making smartwatches popular, is expected to launch an updated version of its timepiece. The Pebble Time boasts a cool new design, colour screen and a battery that lasts a week.

GUESS SMARTWATCH

And fashion brand Guess is set to join the wearable market with a super stylish smartwatch of its own, although it’s expected to offer fewer smart features than the watches coming from tech brands.

AIQ

MWC might also see wearables move on from wrist wear with the unveiling of new smart clothes from AiQ. These incredible gadgets have sensors woven into their fabric, making them perfect for monitoring your fitness. But new versions on show next week could bring features that everyone could use every day.

With wearables set to become smaller and more stylish, 2015 could finally be the year that we all start wearing them.
