ARE WE ON THE ROAD TO SUCCESS?

Cars that can drive themselves have been on the tip of the tech industry’s tongue for years. We’re all excited about the prospect of the smart car, but the reality is that they’re a few years away. Or so it would seem…

VOLVO

Swedish manufactures, Volvo, will be launching a fleet of 1,000 XC90s in Sweden and Norway, with plans for the cars to take over in adverse weather conditions.

“Imagine a world where road status data, collected by cars, is shared with other road users and with local authorities through a connected cloud – a world where the benefit of anonymised data-sharing supports convenience and life-saving services, while helping to contribute to a better society. Volvo Cars is working on realising such a future scenario.” said Klas Bendrik, vice president and group CIO at Volvo.

But the dream is much bigger than a mere 1,000 connected vehicles. Volvo hopes its vision will extend to smart traffic lights, weather updates, emergency vehicle notifications, all based on data collected by the cars and stored in The Cloud.

RENAULT-NISSAN

Meanwhile, over at Renault-Nissan, autonomous cars are just around the corner. With electric cars quickly gaining popularity, the company is now turning its attention to autonomous vehicles – the next logical step in the automobile’s development.

“This is a trend which is going to transform our product,” Carlos Ghosn, the company’s CEO, tells MWC. “It is resonating a lot with consumers.”

Next year we will see Renault-Nissan delivering products with the ability to drive autonomously. Much like Volvo’s vision, Ghosn recognises the importance of shared traffic information in a Cloud system. He goes onto explain that driverless technology “is ready today, we just need the regulators to accept it.”

VISA

An unlikely name to crop up here it might seem, but the financial company has announced that it will be joining forces with Pizza Hut (an even more unlikely name). The goal is to one day allow people to order pizza from menu boards displayed in their cars.

The car will notify the restaurant when you’re nearby, so your pie is still piping hot when you pick it up.
