MWC day 1: wearables

MWC has got off to a great start in Barcelona. And one of the big trends we’re seeing is wearables, and in particular, virtual reality and augmented reality headsets. So here are our favourite wearables from our first day at MWC 2015.

While Samsung partnered with Oculus, the company at the forefront of virtual reality with its Rift headset, HTC chose to partner with Valve, the PC gaming giant, to create its new headset. The HTC Vive is aimed at gamers and is compatible with new wireless controllers that are designed to make gaming more immersive. Vive also has unbeatable performance, being able to play video at 90 frames per second for smooth visuals.

The Cogito watch isn’t the newest smartwatch at MWC, but it is one of the most intriguing. It looks just like a normal watch, with hands and a battery that’ll last a year. But, it pairs to your phone via Bluetooth so it can let you know of any notifications.

The watch will vibrate and symbols on the face will light up to tell you what type of notification it is. The fact the Cogito watch seems to solve the battery issues faced by most smartwatches makes it a winner in our books.

We got another chance to see Microsoft’s futuristic augmented reality headset, Hololens, today. Rather than transporting you to a virtual world, Hololens puts virtual images, that you can interact with, over the real world. Unlike Google Glass, the visor covers your entire field of vision, so you can truly get lost in your own living room.

There’s a new Samsung Gear VR designed to fit thenew Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. If you didn’t see the Gear VR that was launched for the Galaxy Note 4, it’s a virtual reality headset that uses your phone’s screen to show immersive 3D content. And because you have a headset on, all you can see is the screen so you quickly lose yourself in a virtual world. With the Galaxy S6′s super high resolution screen, it works better than ever.

Fashion brand, Guess, mightn’t be the first company you think of when it comes toglobal technology shows, but the retailer has turned up with its own take on smartwatches. The Guess Connect combines the company’s most popular watch with a handy notification panel so you have a classic timepiece and a convenient smartwatch.

It even has a microphone so you can use your phone’s digital personal assistant to send messages, make calls and more. Plus there are two batteries, one that lasts 2-5 days to power the notifications and one that lasts 2-3 years to power the watch.
