MWC: Wireless charging from IKEA

IKEA TO PRODUCE FURNITURE THAT CAN CHARGE YOUR SMARTPHONE

The Swedish furniture company will be introducing Qi technology to some of it products, so you will be able to wirelessly charge your devices.

The announcement came on Sunday on the opening evening of Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Your eyes are not deceiving you, dear reader; we’re really reporting smartphone-charging furniture.

This news essentially means that in the not too distant future you will be able to wirelessly charge your devices, like tablets and smartphones, by placing them on top of furniture from IKEA.

WHO OR WHAT IS QI?

Qi is a company that has gained a lot of popularity within the wireless charging industry, with the technology already being used in many places like hotels, restaurants, cafes and airports. But now IKEA has decided it’s time for the smart-coffee table, or smart-lamp… smart-whatever you want, really.

It’s also been heard that IKEA will be producing wireless charging kits that can be fitted into existing pieces of furniture – they will cost somewhere in the region of £22. Furniture with this new inbuilt charging capability will cost on average £15 more than the equivalent, non-wireless charging versions.

It’s assumed that the coming together of these two companies will help cement one mainstream standard for wireless charging, allowing the industry to grow.

Some smartphone and tablets already have Qi charging, like the new Samsung Galaxy S6, which was announced at MWC yesterday. Check out more here.
