MWC: Kyocera's solar powered phone

SOLAR POWERED SMARTPHONES

Japanese phone maker Kyocera has wowed MWC 2015 by showing off a concept for a solar powered smartphone called Torque SKT01.

The phone has a solar panel embedded in the screen, between the LCD layer that produces the image and the touch layer that senses your swipes and taps.

The solar powered phone can get enough charge from the sun to power its antennae, the biggest draw on power when you’re not using your phone, which means its battery will last much longer than normal.

The phone itself runs Android and has a rugged body. So like most Kyocera phones, it’ll stand up to the worst you can throw at it.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

By the sound of things, Kyocera has introduced Wysips Crystal technology by Sunpartner into its prototype. For those of you not up to date on Wysips component, this process entails placing a thin layer on top of, or underneath, the device’s display.

Kyocera hasn’t said when it plans to get phones with embedded solar panels to market, but now that there’s a prototype device that works, we hope it’ll be months rather than years before we can get our hands on one.

Do you like the sound of a solar powered phone? How much power can it really retain? The premise certainly sounds appealing, but we’ll be interested to find out just how practical it is.Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
