MWC day 2: Smartphones

TOP SMARTPHONES FROM DAY TWO

It’s day two of Mobile World Congress 2015, and while the talk of the show has definitely been new, unusual wearables and smart tech, our heart still belongs to smartphones. Here’s our favourite new mobile technology revealed today.

EYEPRINT ID BY ZTE

Your fingerprint isn’t the only unique thing about you. Your retina is just as individual, which is why the new the ZTE Grand S3 has an innovative new feature called Eyeprint ID.

Rather than using your fingerprint, the phone scans your eyeball with the front-facing camera to make sure it’s you before it unlocks itself. Helpful if you have your hands full, we suppose.

KAZAM TORNADO 348

This smartphone is the equivalent to size zero. The new Kazam Tornado 348 is the world’s slimmest smartphone at just 5.15mm, with a tiny bezel and an AMOLED screen. It’s been registered as the world’s slimmest smartphone in the Guinness Book of Records, but knowing how fast this industry moves, it’s likely some other upstart smartphone is waiting in the wings to knock it off it’s perch.

YEZZ

In the future, your phone will be made of little bits of Lego that you can pop out to improve various features. Don’t like the camera? Just pop out the camera module and put another one in. It saves you having to replace your phone all the time. Google has been working on this tech as part of its Project Ara, and now smartphone maker, Yezz, has been one of the first to take advantage of this interesting new idea. Image by CNET.

LENOVO VIBE SHOT

Serious photographers are always a bit scathing of your average smartphone, but maybe the new Lenovo Vibe Shot will change their minds. It has a 16MP rear camera paired with a tricolor flash. It also has a physical shutter button, and a ‘pro’ mode, which provides lots of professional photography tools.

BLACKBERRY LEAP

Hot on the heels of the unique Passport square smartphone, BlackBerry has gone physical keyboard-less with the new Leap. It’s new 5-inch touchscreen smartphone with a great 25-hour standby battery life, and also boasts all of BB’s quality software, including new BlackBerry Blend.
