Best smartphones of MWC 2015

Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2015 is coming to an end. We’ve seen the new launches, some weird gadgets and some impressive innovations. And now we can take a look at which of the MWC smartphones that are likely to come to the UK we’re most excited about.

SAMSUNG GALAXY S6 & GALAXY S6 EDGE

Top of the list are the new Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge. They mark a real step forward for Samsung, finally bringing a premium design to match the top specs that the Galaxy S series has always had. And, of course, the Galaxy S6 edge has its unique double-edged screen that looks fantastic and gives a handy new way to check notifications and get to your most used stuff fast.

In terms of specs, the Galaxy S6s are going to be hard to beat. 5.1 inch Quad HD screens give the highest pixel density around for sharper images. Samsung’s homemade octa core processor is fantastically fast. And even the phone’s memory runs much faster than normal so there’s no lag when opening photos or apps.

HTC ONE M9

HTC made a splash at MWC too, launching the new HTC One M9. Compared to the One M8, the new phone has a squarer design that’s easier to hold and mirrored edges that give a whole new look. The HTC One M9 also has a massively upgraded camera. The new one takes massive 20MP photos, much sharper than before. And inside there’s Qualcomm’s latest high end processor to whisk you through the phone effortlessly.

MICROSOFT LUMIA 640

It wasn’t just flagship smartphones on show at MWC, Microsoft launched the great value Lumia 640. It has a sleek design that feels like a premium plastic smartphone, a 5 inch HD screen, 8MP camera and big 2,500mAh battery. And as it runs Windows Phone 8.1, it comes with loads of really useful Microsoft apps built in and, in theory, it should be upgradable to Windows 10 when it launches on phones.

LG MAGNA

LG chose MWC as the place to launch a whole range of smartphones that sit below the flagship LG G3. The best of the bunch was definitely the LG Magna. It should cost less than £200, but LG has managed to give it a curved screen like the LG G Flex 2, so it has a brilliant unique design. That curved screen is a 5 inch HD display and on the back of the phone there’s an 8MP camera, while inside there’s a fast quad core processor to keep things running.

BLACKBERRY LEAP

BlackBerry has once again abandoned its faithful QWERTY keyboards and launched the BlackBerry Leap, a smartphone with a 5 inch HD touchscreen. The Leap is aimed at young professionals, specifically those who have started their own business. So it comes with a big focus on security and BlackBerry Assistant, the voice controlled app that’ll make sure you never miss a meeting. It’s also meant to last 25 hours between charges with heavy use, so there’s no need to worry about battery.

BLACKBERRY’S UNEXPECTED, UNNAMED CURVED SLIDER

BlackBerry also dropped a massive teaser for a high end smartphone it plans to launch later this year. At the end of the BlackBerry Leap presentation, the guys at BlackBerry pulled out phone with a curved screen that wraps around the edges of the body like the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge. It also has a slide out keyboard like the old BlackBerry Torch phones.
