GOOGLE’S PROJECT ARA ANNOUNCES FIRST MODULAR MOBILE

There has been a lot of build up to this moment, but on 14 January in Mountain View, California, Project Ara announced its new modular handset, the Spiral 2.

This model is the first of its kind to go on general sale, we’re all just waiting on adefinite release date. But, let’s backtrack a second – what exactly is Project Ara?

PROJECT WHAT?

Essentially, this is a smartphone that invites everyone to easily customise what his or her smartphone can do. Anything from the camera specs, the size of the battery or even a cracked screen – everything can be removed and replaced, a bit like Lego bricks. Check out this video Google has released for a bit of a better idea.

Spec-wise, the phone is nothing to rave about. The screen will be HD quality, there will be a 5 megapixel camera, and the battery capacity is said to be 20% – 30% smaller than the average smartphone’s. So, nothing mind-blowing right now, but there are already whispers of a Spiral 3, which will hopefully feature more flagship qualities like 4G.

It’s worth noting that the phone will be very affordable, and that of course the specs above will be changeable as soon as the modules are available.

At the conference, Google explained that users will be able to do something called ‘hot-swapping’, which means that if you need to replace a battery that’s running low, you can take it out quickly and put a new one in without the phone having to restart.

The Spiral 2 will initially hit shelves in Puerto Rico later this year, where Google will look to take advantage of the small market – a bit like a training ground before it’s rolled out to major networks.

Have anything to add? We’d love to hear what you think of the likes of Project Ara. Drop us a comment below.
