Neptune Duo is a wearable revolution

You may not have heard of Neptune, but the small company specialises in innovative smartwatches. So it’s hardly surprising that its newly-announced Neptune Duo is a whole new concept for wearable devices.

By now, you’re probably wondering what makes the Neptune Duo so special. Well, while most smartwatches like the Motorola Moto 360 and LG G Watch R need to be connected to a smartphone to get the most out of them, the Neptune Duo flips that on its head.

The gadget’s made up of two parts, a smartwatch known as the Hub and a dumb screen known as the Pocket screen. The Hub takes a SIM card so it makes phone calls, sends texts and connects to the internet on its own, while the Pocket screen is just there for when you need extra space to watch a movie or send a long email.

This has a few big advantages. First, watches are harder to lose because they’re on your wrist. Second, if you lose the Pocket screen, you don’t lose any of your information as it’s all stored on the Hub, and the screen is relatively cheap to replace. And finally, having a smartwatch that can do everything is much more convenient than having to pull a phone out your pocket all the time.

As you can see from the video above, the Neptune Duo’s Hub does everything you’d expect a smartphone and smartwatch to do. It’s even solved the problem of texting on a small screen by using handwriting recognition.

Neptune even seems to have cracked the battery conundrum faced by smartwatches. The Hub has a remarkably big 1,000mAh battery built in and the Pocket screen has a huge 2,800mAh one. The reason the dumb screen has such a big battery is so that you can use it to charge the Hub when it runs low on power. Neptune reckons this system would give you a few day’s life from a single charge.

And don’t think that because everything’s run from a smartwatch the Neptune Duo will give you fewer features like you get from Android Wear smartwatches. The Hub runs the latest Google operating system, Android Lollipop, so you still get all the apps and smart features you want.

The Neptune Duo isn’t wanting for power either. It has a speedy quad core processor to run your favourite apps and is 4G ready for superfast mobile internet.

If Neptune Duo looks like the wearable for you, it’s planned for launch towards the end of 2015.You can pre-order it now with a few different payment options. If you pay nothing now, it’ll cost you $798 at launch. If you pay $49 now, it’ll cost you $649 at launch. Pay $199 now and then $399 at launch. Or pay $498 now and it won’t cost you a penny more.
