HTC ONE M9 UNVEILED
The HTC One M9 has finally been announced, showing off a more refined design, impressive new camera and interesting new ways to personalise the software.
For the last two years, HTC has been winning awards for the design of its One series of smartphones, so HTC hasn’t made any radical changes to the One M9. Instead, it keeps the gently curved aluminium construction, but now the edges are a little squarer so you get a better grip.
Those new edges have a modern mirrored look, which might not be to everyone’s taste but it’s good to see HTC make an effort to make the new phone look different.
From the front, you won’t really notice much of a change at all. The screen’s still a 5 inch Full HD panel and there are still HTC’s crisp, loud BoomSound stereo speakers. But those speakers now have Dolby technology so they can create virtual surround sound.
One thing that definitely isn’t the same is the camera. HTC has moved its unique UltraPixel camera from the back of the phone to the front, and as this camera is supposed to let in more light than normal, selfies should look bright and sharp.
The main camera now weighs in at 20MP, a massive upgrade from last year that should give pin sharp photos. And while the Dual Camera setup has gone, you can still create the same professional bokeh effect, where the foreground of your photo is in focus and the background is blurred.
You can do more with your hi-res photos on the One M9 too thanks to some new software. HTC has created a great looking themes app that lets you use a photo to inspire an entirely personal theme. The photo becomes your background and the phone pulls out four key colours that it uses to change app icons and menus. And you can choose different styles for all the icons and even the sounds to customise things further.
There’s also a new HTC Sense™ Home widget that automatically pulls in your most used apps depending on where you are and what time of day it is. So if you always read the Daily Mail app at 8:30am on your way to work, it’ll appear on your homescreen. Then, when you get to work, it might change for your emails.
