How to watch Amazon Prime on your smartphone

A guide to adding Amazon Video to your smartphone

If you subscribe to Amazon Prime, you get to enjoy loads of films, TV series’ and documentaries with Amazon Video. Using a smart TV or a desktop computer, you’ll have no problem logging in and kicking back with the wealth of wonderful content Amazon has to offer, but what about entertainment on the go?

Amazon on iOS

If you’re an iPhone user, you’re probably wondering what the point of this article is. Getting Amazon Video on your device is pretty straightforward – you just download the app as you would any other, type in your details, and you’re away.

…but what about poor Android users?

Amazon on Android

This is where it gets a little tricky, but it can be done. This is how to install the Amazon Prime Video service on your Android smartphone…

Head to Amazon.com

You can’t download the Amazon app straight from the Google Play Store like normal. Instead, you have to go through your browser.

Once there, type in http://www.amazon.com/apps and tap the Amazon Underground button. This is basically Amazon’s app store.

Unknown sources

When you start the download, your device will recognise this isn’t coming from the trusty Google Play Store, and will double check you know what you’re doing. To allow the download to happen, you have to enable a setting called ‘Unknown sources’.

If your device doesn’t take you there automatically, go to Settings > Security > and hit the toggle button entitled ‘Unknown sources’.

Install the app

Once you’ve done this, you’ll be free to download stuff straight from the browser. Once it’s downloaded, it should appear in your notifications bar, so pull down from the top of the screen and tap it.

If it’s not there, search in your downloads file – it’ll be called ‘Amazon_App.apk’.

Time to get Amazon Video

Go into the Underground app, and type in the search bar at the top: ‘Amazon Video’. Tap ‘Go’, and when you find the app, tap ‘Get’. At this stage you might have to go through the same process of allowing ‘Unknown sources’ we mentioned in the second step above.

Almost there…

Still with us? Now you should have the Amazon Prime Video app. Once it’s downloaded, click on the file and sign in with your Amazon account details. And, it’s done.
