How to switch from Android to iOS

Securely transfer all your stuff from Google to iPhone

Moving operating systems can come with its complications. But Apple's making it easter. This is everything you need to know if you’re planning on moving from Android to iOS.

Move to iOS app

Head to the Google Play Store and download Apple’s Move to iOS. Once it’s on your Android phone, agree to the terms and conditions, and proceed to the screen that reads ‘Find Your Code’.

Pop your SIM card into your new iPhone, choose your language, and don’t* sign into a Wi-Fi network. After this, you’ll eventually arrive at a screen called ‘Apps and Data’, which will help you collect content from an old device. Select ‘Move Data from Android’.

Transfer your data

Enter the six-digit code that appears on iPhone into your Android device, and you’ll then be invited to choose which stuff you want to transfer. iPhone creates its own Wi-Fi network, which your Android smartphone will automatically join, and then the transfer will begin. This can take a little while, depending on how much stuff you’ve got saved.

When it’s finished, enter your Apple ID, or if you don’t have one, set one up. The only thing it doesn’t do is transfer your apps – but seeing as some of the applications from Google aren’t available on iOS (and vice versa) it’ll give you a chance to shed all those one-timer apps you’ve been hoarding for a while.

Extra tips

If you’re concerned about saving storage space on your new iPhone, back up all your pictures to Google Photos before you transfer. If you’re not already using the cloud-based system, it’s a great space-saver, and can be accessed from anywhere using your Gmail account.

So instead of download all your snaps to your new smartphone, keep them in the sky, and never run out of room.

And finally, don’t bin your retired Android smartphone. Have a check through to see if there’s anything that’s been missed. And if so, save it Google Drive. Once you’re happy you’ve got everything, reset it, head to your local Carphone Warehouse, and ask about our trade-in programme. We give you cash for your old phone.

*Through our testing we found that the app jams during the transfer if you’re connected to any other Wi-Fi networks on either phone. So make sure you’ve deactivated the setting before going ahead.
