Have you ever lost your phone? It’s natural to feel paniced, but not all is lost. All the major smartphones have ways of tracking, locking and wiping them so you can find, or at least secure them. Here are the top four...
Android Device Manager
Google’s Android Device Manager is designed to help your find your lost or stolen Android device.
To get it working on your phone, all you need to do is make sure you keep the Google app up to date and have location services switched on. Then you can just type ‘Where’s my phone’ into Google on your computer and it’ll show you a map of where it is. Clicking on the map will take you through to the full Android Device Manager page where you can ring, lock or wipe your phone for added security.
Find My iPhone
Apple has Find My iPhone to help you keep your Apple devices secure. Just like Android Device Manager, Find My iPhone will help you find, lock and wipe your phone remotely. But you’ll need to download the app from the App Store first (do it now). Once you’ve downloaded Find My iPhone, you just need to go to the Settings menu > iCloud > Find My iPhone, at the bottom to switch it on.
If your phone does go walkabout, you can head over to the iCloud website. Here you track your iPhone and make sure it’s secure. You can even send a message to your iPhone’s lock screen that has a contact number in it, so if a good samaritan finds your phone they can get it back to you. The only catch is that your phone needs to be switched on.
Find My Windows Phone
Microsoft’s Find My Phone can ring, lock, erase or locate your smartphone from anywhere. It’s already set up on your phone, so if you lose it just head over to the Find My Phone site and log in with your Microsoft account.
From this page you can look see your phone on a map, make it ring, erase all of your information from it or lock it and get it to show a message to anyone who finds it. Your phone will need to be switched on however, and have an internet connection.
BlackBerry phones use BlackBerry Protect to help you find, wipe or lock your missing phone. You need to download the app on your phone from BlackBerry World and set it up with your BlackBerry ID.
Then if you lose your phone, you can go to the BlackBerry Protect website on your computer and lock it, wipe it and locate it. The only catch is that your phone needs to be switched on and have an internet connection.
