Best smartphones for long battery life

Picture the scene. Your phone’s battery has just died on you, and you’ve got no other way to call home or check the earliest train times. We all know the feeling. You could carry around a portable power bank with you, but what might also help is a phone with a longer-lasting battery.

With this in mind, we’ve picked out some phones that should last you a little longer the next time you find yourself on a long-haul trip or in a tight spot. Read on for our pick of the best.

A bit about battery life

Before we reveal our list of phones with a better battery life, it’s worth nothing that your battery might last more or less, depending on how you’re using it. Battery life is usually measured in milliampere-hour, or mAh for short. It refers to how much electrical charge a battery can hold.

Most phones these days hover around the 3000mAh mark, and slightly above. The higher the number, the more likely it is that your phone’s battery will last longer.

A 3000mAh battery should ideally give you around 15-20 hours of talk time, 10 hours of web browsing, and around 10-15 hours of video playback depending on your device.

Generally, most phones with a 3000 mAh battery should get you through most of the day, even with general app use, but if you’re always on your phone, or you’re something of a social media monster, you may want a phone with little more. Here are a few we’d suggest.

Huawei P20 Pro

If you’re looking for a phone to take on a day trip, you can’t go far wrong with the Huawei P20 Pro. Its battery is rated at a massive 4000mAh, which means it lasts longer than most.

Huawei’s own tests found that you’ll get around 25 hours of talk time, but don’t forget that you’ll probably be taking lots of photos with the P20 Pro’s amazing triple-lens camera, which is likely to eat into battery life.

Still, thanks to Huawei’s Supercharge technology, a 30-minute charge gives you 58 percent battery power. That’s a real lifesaver when you need some extra power in a jiffy.

Nokia 7 Plus

Nokias have always delivered excellent battery life, and the Nokia 7 Plus is no exception. The 3800mAh battery offers plenty of juice to last the day, or more, depending on your usage. The phone itself isn’t bad either. It has a 6-inch Full HD+ screen that’s ideal for watching movies on the train or in the car (but not if you’re driving!), if you find yourself on a long road trip. The 7 Plus is powered by Android One, which means you get all the best apps already pre-installed on the phone, straight out of the box.

Google Pixel 2 XL

Google’s Pixel 2 XL isn’t just a pretty phone. It’s packed with neat features, including one of the best cameras around. Photographers will love the f/1.8 aperture that’s capable of capturing stunning photos in low light. There’s also unlimited photo and video storage thanks to Google Photos.

The battery life’s not to be sniffed at either. It has a 3520mAh battery that goes the distance. Even better, a 15-minute charge gives you up to seven hours of power.

Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus

There’s a whole lot to love about the Samsung Galaxy S9+. From its curved Quad HD+ screen, to that excellent camera, and slow-motion video skills, the S9+ is a superb all-rounder. The battery? 3500mAh, which gives you up to 13 hours of 3G web browsing to keep you occupied on your travels, or up to 15 hours of you’re using WiFi. Music playback is an impressive 54 hours.

BlackBerry KEY2

Looking for something a little different? Then how about the BlackBerry KEY2. It’s got a full QWERTY keyboard that’s the bee’s knees when it comes to typing out long messages and replying to emails. The dual 12MP camera isn’t too shabby either, and with 64GB of storage, there’s plenty of space for your photos and apps.

BlackBerry is rightfully proud of its 3500mAh battery life, which the company says will last up to two days, or up to 25 hours or more. That way you can hit up your favourite websites, and browse social media to your heart’s content, without having to worry about your battery running low.

Each of the above phones are available now from Carphone Warehouse. Do you have a long-lasting phone that you’d love to recommend? Then do tell us, in the comments below.
