5 of the best things from Google I/O 2018

Our pick of I/O 2018

I/O 2018, Google’s annual developer conference, is over for another year. It was an event packed with major announcements, and it gave us some great insights into the features that Google will be launching shortly. So, now that the dust has settled, lets take a look at the things we’re most looking forward to.

Google Assistant will make calls for you

Google Assistant is going to be capable of doing lots more – even making phone calls on your behalf. With the help of new technology known as Duplex, it’ll be able call up a restaurant, speak to a real person and make a reservation. We heard a demo of it in action during the event, and it really is incredible.

Google Maps will show you where to go

You’ll be using the power of AR to find your way about shortly. If you’re stuck for directions, all you’ll need to do is go into Google Maps and hold your phone up. You’ll see a street view on your phone’s display, along with signs and arrows telling you where to go.

Google Photos will be all about sharing

Suggested Actions is a new Google Photos feature that identifies friends or family members in photos, and then offers to share the photo with them. A quick button press will be all that it takes.

Gmail will help you write emails

Smart Compose is coming to Gmail. Think of it as the next generation of predictive text. Rather than just suggesting words, it’ll come up with entire sentences for you to slot into your emails. Not only will you have to type less, you’ll also be able to send emails quicker.

Google will take better care of you

Android P, Google’s new operating system, will come with some thoughtful features that focus on your ‘digital wellbeing’. These include an app timer to remind you how long you're spending on the likes of Fortnite, and a wind-down feature that turns on night mode at a pre-set time. You’ll also be able to schedule your own breaks, allowing you to step away from your phone and do something else instead (it’ll be tough, we know).

And there you have it - our favourite moments from Google I/O 2018. Did you follow the event yourself? What was your favourite announcement? Who will you ask Duplex to call? Post a comment below and share your thoughts.
