Our top 5 phones for music

As Madonna once noted, music makes the people come together. But what about those times when you want to be alone with the music? When you want to get those headphones on and get lost in music – ah, yes, another song reference.

We’ve done some investigating, and we think these phones are amongst the best when it comes to listening to music.

LG V30

LG’s V series of phones has always been serious about audio. Their 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter) might be a bit of a mouthful, but it’s worth it. Put simply, this technology turns digital audio files into the audio you end up hearing through your headphones, and gives you a fuller, more rounded sound, closer to how it would have started before being converted. The Quad DAC from the V20 has been upgraded for the V30, and this improved quality is further enhanced by B&O earphones in the box.

Huawei Mate 10 Pro

It’s time to crank up the power. The Huawei Mate 10 Pro has two speakers, and together they’re capable of providing some pretty meaty volume. There's a richness to the sound, and the quality is good – 32 bit hi-res good.

iPhone X

The iPhone X provides the best sound quality on any iPhone to date. The speakers are louder, and the sound you get from them is cleaner. And once you get your wireless headphones on, you’ll be able to enjoy the detailed bass, and clarity where instruments overlap. OK, there’s no 3.5mm headphone port, but we’re all used to that by now, aren’t we?

HTC U11

Turn it up to 11. U11, that is. Great clarity is guaranteed with this phone, with sound that totally envelopes you. And here’s a clever thing – with the bundled headphones, you can scan the inside of your ear which apparently creates your own audio profile. Also, active Noise Cancellation will help bring down the distractions. And one more thing – if you put the phone down on a flat surface, the so-called resonance chambers will expand, but what that means for you is better sound quality.

Samsung Galaxy S9

While all around them are taking the headphone jack out of their phones, Samsung are not – which although a small thing, may be a clincher for some. But we’re also here to talk about sound quality, and there’s an improvement here, too. Having done some work with AKG, the speakers now deliver a clearer sound, and there are now two outputs (at the bottom and through the earpiece). Oh, and it’s loud. Really loud.

If you think we’ve missed a phone off the list – a phone that you think is great for listening to music on – tell us below the line.
