What we know about Apple's new 2018 iPad

We love an update from Apple. So we were pretty hyped to hear about the release of a new, affordable iPad. And the word is that this model’s been updated with some pretty impressive new features.

What makes the sixth-generation iPad so great, you might ask. Well, firstly, it works with the Apple Pencil (the first time an entry-level iPad has ever supported Pencil stylus) and secondly, it’s packing a much faster A10 “Fusion” processor. But let’s get into the nitty-gritty, shall we?

Specs to impress

The new iPad is fronted by a 9.7-inch Retina display, perfect for watching movies or getting your scribble on. There’s an 8MP rear camera and a 1.2MP selfie camera, not bad considering its price range. There’s even a first-gen touch ID home button on the front for an added level of security.

Although the specs might not match the glitzier Pro models, you get loads of bang for your buck. In fact, there really isn’t much you can’t do on this.

Pencil it in

Why did Apple introduce a Pencil Stylus to their new iPad? It’s all part of their big education push, which was unveiled at a high school in Chicago at the end of March.

The Pencil itself gives you the chance to be even more creative and productive - whether you’re marking up screenshots, sketching out ideas or making some quick handwritten notes. Measuring both pressure and tilt, it provides pixel-perfect accuracy. Plus, iPad’s palm rejection tech even makes it possible to rest your hand on the screen while you jot away to your heart’s content.

And if you think you’re restricted to purchasing an Apple-only stylus, think again. The new iPad is also compatible with a cheaper Logitech pen called ‘The Crayon’ – so nothing comes between you and your doodling.

Power boost, anyone?

Move over A9 chip, the new iPad is supported by Apple’s A10 “Fusion” chip. iOS 11 runs a lot more smoothly than its predecessor, meaning you’ll play apps and games with all the horsepower you’d get from an iPhone 7.

Apple also announced that the new iPad has advanced sensors, better equipped to run ARKit-powered augmented reality experiences (purely for educational purposes, of course).

If you’re a fan of iWork, you’re in for a treat as well. The suite is getting a massive upgrade. Pages, Numbers, and Keynote are all introducing the Pencil so you can annotate and add drawings or scribbles to all your documents and presentations.

The verdict

This new affordable iPad has loads going for it. From Apple Pencil compatibility and an overall greater performance to its advances in running powerful AR apps. Sure, it’s great for education but the new iPad is perfect for any Apple lover with a creative streak.
