How to get started with your Galaxy S9
Picture the scene. You’re the proud owner of the new Galaxy S9. You’ve carefully unboxed it, you’ve taken the time to fully charge it, and you’re now dying to try out all the fantastic features we told you about.
But hold on a minute. Before you dive in to a dark corner to test out the camera’s low-light skills and the like, there are a few things you’ll need to do first. We’ve rounded up some handy tips to help you get the most from your S9, and to keep it safe and secure.
1. Make it trackable - set up Find My Mobile
We know you’re not planning on losing your S9 any time soon, but these things happen. So, just to be on the safe side, you should set up Samsung’s Find My Mobile feature. It’ll help you take control of your phone remotely, if it ever does stray from your side.
It’s easy enough to set up Find My Mobile on your S9. If you’re doing it for the first time, you’ll need to sign up to a Samsung account. Then head to Settings, tap ‘Lock screen and security’, ‘Find My Mobile’, ‘Add account’ and enter your Samsung account details. Then if the worst happens and you lose your precious phone, you can track its exact location. You can also lock the screen, the power button, and Samsung Pay. For extra security, you can even delete all the data that was stored on your S9.
2. Make it secure – set up Intelligent Scan
The S9’s Intelligent Scan is a sci-fi style security feature that uses both iris scanning and facial recognition to unlock itself - for you, and only you. Best of all, it’s super-fast and incredibly efficient. You’ll be able to get into your S9 with a quick glance, even in dark conditions.
To set up your S9’s Intelligent Scan, go to Settings, and tap ‘Lock screen and security’. From the ‘Biometrics’ section, select ‘Intelligent Scan’. You’ll then be guided through the rest of the iris and facial recognition process, so be sure to have your face and eyes available.
3. Give it a layer of extra protection
Take a quick look at the back of your S9. It’s pristine, and completely scratch-free, right? If you want to keep it looking like that, you should seriously consider investing in an official S9 phone cover.
The best covers add to your smartphone experience, rather than getting in the way. Take the Samsung S9 LED Cover, for example. Its clever LED system on the front panel shows you the time, incoming calls and other notifications without you having to open it. It looks great too.
You’ll find a wide range of S9 cases and accessories on the Carphone Warehouse website. Take your pick.
4. Make it suitable for late night use
Smartphone displays emit blue light. That’s fine during the day, but not so good later on at night. It’s recommended that you stop looking at blue light up to three hours before you plan on going to sleep, to give your brain a chance to wind down.
Luckily, the S9 comes with a blue light filter that sucks the blue light from your screen, giving your old grey matter a chance to chill. To do this, go to Settings, tap ‘Display’, then ‘Blue light filter’. You can then play about with it to find what works best for you.

5. Make it suitable for single-handed use
The S9’s 5.8-inch Infinity Display looks amazing, but you might just find it a bit of a challenge to swipe around with one hand.
That’s not ideal if you use your phone while standing up on public transport - single-handed swiping is the only way to go on those kind of journeys. Luckily, the S9 has a mode that makes the on-screen content more compact and suitable for single-handed use. Head to Settings, tap Advanced Features, then One-handed mode.
Thanks for taking the time to read these tips. If you’ve followed them carefully, you can now enjoy your new S9 to its full potential.
If you haven’t got an S9 yet, you can put that right by heading to the Carphone Warehouse website and placing an order.
