Do we still need memory cards in 2018?

Are microSD cards still worth investing in?

There are many things to consider when buying a new phone. One of those things is how much storage space you’ll need. The amount of free online storage options such as Dropbox, iCloud, and Google Drive means you don’t even need a memory card to store your photos, music, and movies. Storage may be going digital, but don’t bank on the humble SD card dying out just yet. Here’s why you’ll still be needing one in 2018, and beyond...

1. More storage

This one’s a no-brainer. MicroSD cards make it easy to increase the storage of your phone. Just insert one into your phone to make more room for your photos, music, movies, and apps.

2. A cheaper option

Not all smartphones have the option to use memory cards. Some devices come with lots of internal storage already built-in. However, these handsets can be more expensive. A cheaper option would be to spend less on a handset with lower internal storage, and then purchase a microSD card to increase the storage.

3. Choose how much storage you need

The massive choice of memory cards out there gives you flexibility to choose how much storage you need, and how much you spend. You may not even need one at all, but if you do, there are plenty of memory cards to suit your needs, and budget.

4. Share files to your PC

Already have a memory card? Then then get a memory card reader, and hook it up to your PC or Android tablet to share any files you have on your phone.

5. Improve the performance of your smartphone

Using a memory card can actually improve the performance of your phone, as some devices will let you install apps on them. This will help to reduce the internal memory consumption of your phone, which will feel quicker and more pleasant to use.

6. A wide choice of handsets use microSD cards

There are hundreds of handsets to choose from that use memory cards - mostly Android phones. Just head over to Carphone Warehouse, and take your pick from the likes of Samsung, Sony, Nokia, Huawei, and many more.

Do you agree with our article? Does a microSD card have pride of place in your handset? Will you be browsing Carphone Warehouse's memory card range and buying one shortly? Or have you stopped using memory cards completely? It would be great to hear you thoughts, so feel free to post a comment below.
