5 ways to save a bundle on your energy bill

Reduce your bills with these energy saving tips

Any homeowner or renter knows that racking up a worryingly hefty energy bill is all too easy. All it takes is an un-flipped light switch or one too many loads of washing and you’re faced with a frightening figure at the end of the month. Fear not. There are five first steps to understanding energy and saving a bundle.

1. Monitor your energy

For starters, do some detective work on exactly how much energy you’re using each day. Energy-usage monitors are great tools that inform you how much you’re using within the home in real time, and more importantly, how much it’s costing. They even let you know how much you can save if you were to nip some expensive habits in the bud.

So if you’ve got into the routine of leaving phone chargers plugged in, or have an energy-draining appliance, you’ll be told where you’re going wrong and can take immediate action.

2. Smart meters

Smart meters automatically send out your energy usage info to the supplier via wireless networks, eliminating manual readings and estimated bills – which is a great thing.

And, if you use the in-home display, it’s easy to see how much you’re using/spending. Then you can act on the info provided to reduce your energy consumption.

3. Smart lighting

Smart bulbs give you access to a host of features beyond switching them on and off. And, although they cost more than typical light bulbs, in the long run, they can end up saving you significant money on your energy bills.

For example, dimming lights means you use less power. Plus, with app control, if you accidentally leave a light on you can switch it off remotely. It’s also proven that LED lighting is the most energy efficient form of lighting. They achieve the same level of brightness as traditional bulbs using only 10% of energy.

4. Smart heaters

Smart heating is on the rise, becoming more and more prominent in homes across the UK. Companies like Hive provide customers with the ability to control their homes heating from any of their devices.

This couldn’t have come at a better time as fuel costs have risen. In fact, investing in a smart thermostat could save you approximately £60 a year. Once you’ve gone smart, you can experiment with your home’s heat and find the perfect setting – this will help you avoid constantly altering the temperature and incurring higher bills.

5. Switch provider

It’s a competitive market out there, which could work in your favour. If you feel like you could be paying too much for your energy, why not take a look around for a better deal?
