Double selfie lenses. The new smartphone trend?

Dual lenses are making their way onto the front of our smartphones

At Las Vegas’ Consumer Electronics Show, we saw Sony reveal the brand new Xperia XA2, but that wasn’t the only smartphone on show. There was also the Xperia XA2 Ultra (below), boasting not one, but two front-facing lenses, for next-level selfies.

The XA2 Ultra isn’t alone in the world of super selfies, with HTC also lifting the curtain on a double selfie lens phone called the U11 EYEs, currently retailing in Hong Kong (pictured above). So, is this a trend we’re likely to see more of in 2018? If the past is anything to go by, then yes – definitely.

Copycats, copycats

At the beginning of last year, LG launched the G6. It was one of the very first flagship devices to feature a super tall display, with 18:9 (or 2:1) ratio. This basically gives you an extra sliver of screen at the top and bottom of the phone. Reducing bezels and providing a better viewing experience all-round.

But it wasn’t long before other manufacturers jumped on the bandwagon. And by the end of the year, we had tall displays from the likes of Samsung (Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, Galaxy Note8), Google (Pixel 2 XL), and Huawei (Mate 10 Pro).

A very similar trend can be said for dual lens cameras on the back of our favourites smartphones. It’s really only a matter of time before we’ve all got four lenses in our pockets. What a time to be alive.

The benefits

So, what’s the advantage of having all these lenses on our phones? In an age where we’re inarguably obsessed with documenting everything, clearer photography is a big selling point for most. Dual lenses also give you the ability to get more mates in the selfie with wide-shooting angles, and you’ll probably notice a blurrier background, for a professional look.
