5 things we're hoping to see in 2018

What does 2018 have in store?

It was a bumper year for technology in 2017. It was full of big launches such as the Samsung Galaxy S8, and Apple's iPhone X. Both Amazon and Google launched new voice assistants, too, making it a big year for voice-controlled technology. But what’s in store for 2018? Let’s take a look.

More augmented reality apps

Last summer, it was impossible to walk down the street without seeing someone playing Pokémon GO on their phone. The popular monster-catching app was more than a game. It was the moment augmented reality captured the mainstream’s imagination. Young, old – everybody was playing it.

In 2018, we’ll see more AR games. Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is a new game from Niantic – the same team that brought us Pokémon GO. It will use AR technology to let you explore what’s around you, cast spells, and encounter beasts, and meet iconic characters. A release date is yet to be confirmed, but it should land in 2018. And when it does, it could be bigger than Pokémon GO.

Foldable phones

Some rumours are so persistent, that they’re difficult to ignore. For years we’ve heard rumours about a foldable phone appearing on the market, but 2018 could be the year we see the first model, or at least a working concept.

Samsung and Huawei are just two of the companies reported to be launching folding phones in 2018. Such devices are said to resemble tablet devices, that can collapse into more pocket-friendly smartphone proportions. Take these rumours with a pinch of salt, but who knows what 2018 holds?

The evolution of voice assistants (Alexa, Google Assistant, Siri, Bixby)

Voice assistants are here to stay. And they’re only going to get better, thanks to machine learning. Not only will they do as they are told, but they will do so with more accuracy. They'll be able to understand not just what you ask, but how you ask it. Soon, talking to Alexa using your Amazon Echo device, or Google Assistant, will feel more like talking to a human-being. They will be able to do more things.

The list of devices you can control using your voice has been growing, and it will continue to grow even more. Voice control won’t just be a novelty. It’ll be the norm.

Under screen fingerprint scanners

In 2017, iPhone X popularised unlocking your phone using your face. But it’s fingerprint scanning that will take the headlines in 2018. The biggest change we’ll see is the way you use the technology. Fingerprint scanners built into the screen of your phone will make fingerprint unlocking more seamless.

You’ll no longer have to reach around the back of your phone to place your finger on the camera lens, leaving smudge marks in the process. Instead you’ll be able to press down on the front of the screen.

Nokia’s continuing resurgence

Oh, Nokia. How we’ve missed you. After a more than brief hiatus, the Finland-based phone-maker is back. In 2017, we saw the revitalised company return with some great handsets, including a new model of the classic Nokia 3310. However, it’s Nokia’s next premium handsets we're most excited about. Expect great build quality, more photography innovations just like the ‘bothie’ camera seen on the Nokia 8, and specs to match other high-end smartphones.
