What is Whole Home Wi-Fi?

Anyone that has ever experienced Wi-Fi network problems at home knows how frustrating it can be. Whether it’s your favourite Netflix show endlessly buffering, or an important WhatsApp call that ends when you’re walking upstairs, not being able to do what you want, when you want, in your own home can be downright annoying.

Up until recently, the most effective solution for Wi-Fi weak spots, or ‘dead zones’ as they’re often referred to, has been Wi-Fi boosters. These amplify the signal from your router with the aim of providing you with better coverage – but even these can be ineffective in larger homes or homes with thick walls.

Mesh networking kits

A brand new piece of technology, called Mesh networking kits, has been designed by BT to put an end to your home Wi-Fi worries. Previously used mainly in offices, this three-disc set provides full home coverage, and has recently become available for domestic use. What’s more, this revolutionary new technology isn’t exclusive to BT customers. Whole Home Wi-Fi is available to everyone, no matter the broadband provider.

With their ultra-slim and neutral designs, the BT Whole Home discs are discreet and able to fit almost anywhere. And their lights are dimmable to prevent unwanted illuminations in hallways and bedrooms.

How does it work?

Once you’ve unboxed your BT Whole Home networking kit, all you need to do is connect the first of the three discs to the back of your internet router with the supplied cable. You can scatter the other two discs accordingly so that all areas of your home are covered.

Then, simply download the BT Whole Home app onto a device of your choice. Once it’s been installed, all of your devices will automatically connect to the strongest signal at the time. So, if you’re on a FaceTime call downstairs and decide to go upstairs, the Wi-Fi will shift seamlessly between discs – offering you the strongest signal available wherever you are.

The app

The BT Whole Home app really puts you in control. It’s incredibly user-friendly and guides you through the entire set-up process. It lets you test each disc after it’s been placed in your chosen location, and even recommends better locations for maximum results.

What’s more, you can even press pause on certain Wi-Fi network discs. This comes in handy if you want to stop the kids from using the internet to clean their room or come down for dinner. And if that wasn’t enough, the app even shows you how many devices are currently being used in your home at any time, and which discs they’re connected to.
