Best ways to make Wi-Fi calls

With Wi-Fi calling available across a whole range of social media and chat platforms, it’s no wonder people have opted for it instead of using their precious network minutes.

In some cases, like if you’re living in a poor signal area or commuting on the underground, you could be left with no other choice but to turn to Wi-Fi calling or messaging to reach someone. But with loads of free services available - including Skype, Viber and WhatsApp - the question is, which one is the best for you.

Facebook Messenger

It may not be the app that’s been around the longest, but Facebook Messenger is probably one of the most widely used in the world. Despite the fact Facebook Messenger users who want to make calls on their phone have to download a whole new app for the service. It features free messaging, calls, video chats and even has some games to play.

And now the app allows you to reach people you’re not friends with. All you need to do is search their name and you can call them for free on any phone.

Skype

When you think video calls, one of the first names that springs to mind is Skype. Its trademark feature is that it can be used on all devices to call other users.

If you want to call someone who isn’t on Skype you’ll need to pay for credits – but given that it has Facebook and Microsoft account integration, chances are you’ll be able to find most people you know on it anyway.

Viber

Originally starting life as a basic VoIP (voice over internet protocol) service, Viber has gone from strength to strength - offering text chats, voice calls and video chats. Similarly to Skype, you can call anyone else who uses it free of charge but there’s a small fee if you want to call non-members.

With the exception of a few whimsical chat features - like stickers - there isn’t much that separates Viber from other Wi-Fi calling apps – but it definitely deserves props for being one of the first in the game.

WhatsApp

If you haven’t heard of WhatsApp it’s probably because you’ve been living under a rock for the past few years. Originally starting out as a text-only platform, WhatsApp went on to introduce Wi-Fi calls with other users.

It’s enormous subscriber base, power, and seamless connectivity, means it won’t be hard to find people that you know on it.

Network-own Wi-Fi calls

Wi-Fi calling is readily available on most networks, including EE, O2 and Vodafone. This service allows you to use a Wi-Fi network to make and receive phone calls, rather than using the traditional mobile network.

This makes more sense for people that live in areas with poor service. If you’re interested in network own Wi-Fi calling, give your network a call directly.
