What is HTC Edge Sense?

Let’s talk about HTC’s ‘squeezy’ phone

HTC has made a smartphone featuring pressure-sensitive, ‘squeezable’ sides. The U11 has an awful lot of other cool stuff on board too, but the Edge Sense function has got people talking the most. So, what exactly is it?

Edge Sense™ by HTC – what is it?

Basically, when you squeeze the sides of the HTC U11 (bottom half only), you can make the phone do different things without having to touch the screen or utter a vocal command. You can choose what the phone does when it receives a squeeze, and you can customise the amount of pressure required. Sounds good, right?

At the moment, there are two ways of interacting with this feature. A short single squeeze will do one thing, and a longer squeeze will do another. Some of the shortcuts include (but are not limited to):

  • Launching the camera
  • Taking a selfie
  • Turning the torch on
  • Launching Google Assistant
  • Checking the weather

…HTC says more features will be coming later in the year.

Does Edge Sense actually work?

Yes. As you can change the sensitivity of the squeeze, you won’t accidentally launch the camera into selfie mode when picking the U11 up from your desk. Although it has other functions listed above, it does work very well, first and foremost, as a selfie camera shutter button.

Taking a selfie at arm’s length can sometimes be awkward as you fumble to press the on-screen shutter button, but with the U11, it’s never been easier (squeezier?)

Will Edge Sense be coming to other smartphones?

It’s hard to say. We hope this innovative tool doesn’t feel gimmicky six months down the line, and that it finds its way onto other phones in the future. At the moment, there’s nothing to suggest it will be an exclusive U11 feature, nor is there anything to suggest it won’t be making its way elsewhere. So, watch this space.
