Looking back on year 2000 and Nokia 3310

A blast from the past

With the imminent arrival of the new 3310, we’re taking a retrospective look at what we were all enjoying when the phone arrived the first time round in the early 2000s. Join us on a trip down memory lane…

At the turn of the Millennium, having survived the Y2K bug, you were thinking about ditching your trusty Discman and looking at Apple’s new-fangled music machine, the iPod. And we’re confident you knew all the lyrics to at least one of these songs:

  • Britney Spears – Oops I Did It Again
  • Eminem – The Real Slim Shady
  • Shaggy – Angel
  • David Gray – Babylon
  • Uncle Cracker – Follow Me
  • Daft Punk – One More Time
  • Robbie Williams – Rock DJ
  • The Strokes – Last Nite
  • Baha Men – Who Let The Dogs Out?

You waited patiently for dial-up internet to connect, making sure nobody else at home could use the phone

And this was definitely your Windows screensaver.

You revered the Millennium Dome as a feat of modern architecture before it was even finshed

You bravely tried the t-shirt-loose tie combo once or twice. Justin could pull it off, why not you?

And somebody you knew definitely had a ‘going out’ shirt, with flames or a dragon on it

You had an email address with AOL or Blueyonder

DVDs were a slow start, and there was nothing worse than renting a VHS from BlockBuster that hadn’t been rewound to the beginning

Google Maps hadn’t been invented, and if you were going somewhere new you had to buy an actual real life map

Taking a disposable Kodak camera on holiday

...and getting the photos developed at Boots, not knowing what you'd come out with

And of course, you loved your 3310 – the iconic mobile phone that started everything. You had the high score on Snake, and you’d never let any of your friends forget it.
