We compare: Nokia 3310 (2017) v 3310 (2000)

17 years on, what’s new?

Everyone’s favourite retro mobile has been reincarnated, now back for 2017. It was the talk of Mobile World Congress, and everyone – including us – is excited for it to hit shelves. But how much has it actually changed in 17 years?

Cost

Let's start with the big question – how much is it going to set you back? Final numbers haven’t been released for UK pricing just yet, but we can safely assume it’ll be south of £60.

Considering the original 3310 cost about £150 – which could get you a pretty decent entry-level smartphone nowadays – that’s a drop in the ocean.

Display and design

The new version has shed a fair bit of weight, and is 10mm thinner than the 2000 handset. The square corners are gone now too - in their place are smooth, rounded corners, making it a lightweight phone that’s comfortable and easy to hold.

Snake

Everyone's favourite mobile arcade classic is back. The premise remains the same, but there have been a few updates. You can move in more than four directions - even diagonally (using the 4 and 6 keys) - and the game's been colourised. We've also finally had confirmation that the dots we ate back in 2000 are in fact apples. Who knew?

Camera

As if you needed reminding, the original 3310 didn’t have a camera. Can you imagine having a camera, permanently attached to your mobile phone, in the year 2000? What would be the point? There was nowhere to post selfies – what a bleak past we existed in.

On the other hand, the new 3310 has a 2MP sensor for quick snaps on the go. It’s never going to replace the powerful cameras on our smartphones, but could be handy for the odd festival photo.

Power and performance

The old Nokia was famed for its impressive battery life, but it pales in comparison to the new version. Nokia claims the new phone will last up to 744 hours on standby, boasts 22 hours worth of talk time, and music playback of up 50 hours. So you’ll be able to get plenty of use out of the FM radio and inbuilt MP3 player.

For comparison, the 2000 3310 could survive on standby for 55 hours, but we didn’t know any better back then.
