Have you taken the #myAndroid Taste Test?

If you’ve had an Android phone for a while, you probably already know how easy it is to customise. If you don’t like the look or feel of your home screen, there are countless launchers, widgets, wallpaper apps and icon packs to explore and install.

A lot of Android owners are still unaware of all this though, and that’s where Google’s #myAndroid Taste Test comes in. It’s a new online tool designed to help you personalise your phone with stuff that’s just right for your style and personality.

Ready to take the taste test? Here’s all you need to know.

How it works

You can find the #myAndroid Taste Test on the Android website. You’ll be asked 22 rapid-fire questions that will reveal your style and personality, and you’re urged to ‘tap first and think later’. As in life itself, there are no actual wrong answers, and most questions simply ask which kind of graphic or picture you prefer.

The last few questions ask you about your level of Android expertise, and how you use your phone.

The results are in

As soon as you answer the last #myAndroid Taste Test question, the results of your endeavours are displayed onscreen.

You'll see suggestions for wallpaper, icons, launcher and widgets that most closely match your taste, based on your submitted answers. Each recommendation includes a link to the relevant app on the Google Play store.

We’ve tried out the taste test a few times, and we liked most of the suggestions it gave us. It all seems pretty logical – for example, if you describe yourself as a news fan that likes photography, you’ll be presented with news widgets, and wallpapers based on real-life images. Music buffs, on the other hand, get sound-related widgets designed to help them search out their favourite tunes.

What could be better?

The #myAndroid Taste Test got it right most of the time, and came up with a lot of suggestions that interested us. It would have been nice to be able to download all the recommendations with a single click, but that’s not an option - everything needs to be downloaded individually.

And although the #myAndroid Taste Test regularly suggests great-looking wallpapers, you might find yourself spending a lot of time scrolling through other wallpapers to find it. That’s because you only get given a link to the app, rather than the actual wallpaper itself.

One other thing that seems to be causing some controversy is the fact that Google’s Gboard appears on every single test result.

To be fair, it’s listed as an ‘added bonus’, but that hasn’t stopped some people wondering if the #myAndroid Taste Test is little more than a clever ad for Google products…

Let us know what you think about the #myAndroid Taste Test. Have you taken it yet? Did you like the results? Will you be downloading a Gboard as suggested? Share your thoughts below.
