Best wireless speakers for a party

At Christmas parties in the olden days, not everyone could let their hair down. Someone would need to be on stereo duty. It was their responsibility to change CDs quickly and efficiently, and it was quite a skill.

Nowadays it’s a lot easier. You basically just need your smartphone and a good wireless speaker to get the party started. Here are a few of our favourites.

iWantit ISBT10013 wireless speaker

The iWantit ISBT10013 speaker comes with quick and easy Bluetooth connectivity. In no time at all you’ll be streaming your favourite Christmas classics from your compatible phone, tablet or home PC.

This speaker sounds amazing too. It kicks out a powerful stereo sound, and there’s no loss of quality even at high volumes. You’ve also got adjustable bass and treble settings to play with, but be careful – the bass really does pack a punch.

Amazon Echo

When is a speaker more than just a speaker? When it’s Amazon Echo - a smart speaker with an inbuilt virtual assistant, always on, always listening, always awaiting your every command.

What this means for your Christmas party is that you can control the tunes from across the room. Just tell Alexa (the name of the inbuilt virtual assistant) to start your Christmas playlist when the mood’s right. Amazon Echo is compatible with a wide range of smart home products, so if you’ve got everything connected you can ask Alexa to put the lights on and turn the heating down – just to help you get rid of guests that have overstayed their welcome.

Sonos Play 1

The Sonos range of speakers consists of the Play 1, Play 3 and Play 5. You can hook them up together to create something that sounds really special, or you can use them individually. The Play 1 is the least expensive in the range but it’s still a fantastic piece of kit, and will happily belt out your favourite Christmas party tunes with a hefty amount of bass and volume.

Most good streaming services now work with Sonos, including Spotify, 7digital, Amazon, Cloud Player, Aupeo, Deezer, Napster, Rdio, and SoundCloud. And if you’ve got some tunes stored offline, you can use iTunes too.

What’s more, if you're thinking of making Sonos AND Amazon Echo part of your home, there’s some great news. In the New Year, Alexa will be capable of ‘speaking’ to Sonos. This means you’ll be able to play your music, skip tracks and even ask what’s playing, all without having to touch your smartphone.

JBL Flip 3 portable wireless speaker

The JBL Flip 3 is a powerful little speaker. Don't let the picture above fool you - it's a mere 6.5 inches long, yet capable of pumping out sound at an impressive volume. And if you want to take the party to the next level, you can wirelessly link multiple JBL Flip 3 speakers using the free JBL Connect app (available on iOS and Android).

Sony SRS-X11 portable wireless speaker

In terms of size, the Sony SRS-X11 is the baby of the bunch here. It’s a dinky (and dare we say, cute?) little cube, measuring 2 ½-inches in diameter and weighing in at a mere 215g.

It comes with powerful 10W dual passive radiators that boost the bass, and helps the speaker produce a rich sound. There’s also a Stereo Pairing mode that lets you double up on speakers for a full-on stereo experience.
