Biggest mobile advancements of 2016

What has the mobile world given us this year?

Mobile technology is always moving forward, and 2016 has been a big year for innovation. Just a few years ago we didn’t have fingerprint scanners on our phones, and now they’re pretty much commonplace. So, lets take a quick look at what’s been making headlines over the past 12 months.

Iris scanners

The first mobile iris scanner that really made everyone sit up was on the Microsoft Lumia 950, released at the very back end of 2015. Iris scanners are 200-times more secure than previous biometric security systems, like fingerprint scanners for example.

They scan your eyes, and can be used to unlock devices in place of the more traditional passwords or numerical passcode.

Dual lenses

2016 has unarguably been the year of dual lenses on smartphones, with nods to the Huawei P9, LG G5, and iPhone 7 Plus. And with the dual lens came arty bokeh effects, digitally recreating that professional blur you get from a DSLR camera.

The bokeh effect is achieved with a combination of clever software that can measure distance and depth of field, and the two lenses working together to map the whole image.

Always-on displays

Always-on displays (AOD) on our smartphones mean that we should never miss a notification. Featuring on the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S7 and the LG G5 – the function keeps a version of the screen visible at all times, showing the clock and any notification symbols.

There was a lot of confusion around how this would affect battery life at the beginning of the year. Thankfully Samsung has considered that. The Galaxy S7, for example, will only show eight colours when the clock or notifications are illuminated, instead of 16 million when the full screen is active.

What will we see next year? If you’ve got any predictions, drop us a comment below.
