What colour should a smartphone be?

Quora readers answer the big question

Is there really one colour a smartphone should be? Is a black phone the best? We’ve been scouring Q&A website, Quora, for an answer to the age-old question. This is what its readers and answerers are saying...

Akshay writes: “No matter how deep you think on it, you would often end up buying a phone with [the] colour you liked at 1st sight … [on the other hand] you will always regret your choice of buying a phone of particular colour, whenever you see the same phone in the colour you didn't choose.”

So, it’s an instinct thing? Perhaps not. He goes on to talk about how design could be a contributing factor: “If you are buying a phone with thin bezels, you definitely go for darker colours as they complement to the beauty of the bright screen … If you are buying a phone which is built in metal body, always go for white or light colours. Metal shines with light colours.”

Do colours reveal our personalities?

James, however, thinks our choice of colour could be down to personality traits. “Only 20% of our color choices are non-sub-conscious. To further depict this, researchers at Nokia Lumia presented 4 popular cell phone colors namely cyan, white, fuchsia and black to different groups of people. People who selected Cyan were thinkers and philosophers; people who normally select this bold color are happy, knowledgeable and exuberant."

He continues: “People who chose white are the sophisticated personalities. White is generally very hard to maintain and clean, so people who choose white set high standards for themselves. The cleanliness and purity of white cell phones also indicates that the buyers are also clean and pure and innocent … Finally, the most popular color in cell phones in black, as stated above, and the people who select this color are most likely the ones who go with the flow. They are also technologically very savvy…”

It’s up to you

Others admit it’s totally down to the individual. In answer to the question “which colour phone should I buy?” Rhys writes: “I have absolutely no idea who you are. I don't know what you are like, what you like or what you dislike. No one can make this desision [sic] for you on this platform, it is completely your choice.”
