Best crowdfunded projects of 2016

Upcoming tech that works with your smartphone

It’s been a pretty big year for the world of technology. Dual smartphone lenses happened quite spectacularly. VR headsets finally hit the mainstream. We landed a space probe on a moving comet…

It’s all going on.

But, what of the technology that’s still to come? We take a look at some of the most exciting crowdfunded ideas of 2016.

Travelmate smart suitcase

This smart suitcase can weigh itself, charges up your phone, and has an intelligent fingerprint locking system. Oh, and it can also autonomously drive around.

The Travelmate Robotics Suitcase can travel up to 6.75mph and is compliant with most major airline’s carry-on size. It’ll happily take the strain of your hand luggage, providing you’ve got a smartphone running iOS 8/Android 4.4 or later, and follow you wherever you go.

The future of travel or a guaranteed security search? Comment below.

Knocki

Knocki is the latest gadget to help you communicate with your smart home, able to recognise – you guessed it – knocks. The small disk can be attached to any flat surface, making it ‘smart’, in turn letting you tap out different commands to control your tech.

It works through an app, and you can pair it with the likes of the Nest Learning Thermostat, your phone, or smart coffee machine.

ZapBox

ZapBox is to mixed reality (MR) as Google Cardboard is to VR. It lets you interact with holograms that are layered over the real world by your smartphone and its camera, while you wear a cardboard headset.

At the moment, Microsoft is tackling the AR and MR worlds pretty head on, with its ground-breaking headset, Hololens. But the American company’s demo headset will set you back about $3,000 (£2,360).

On the other hand, ZapBox can be backed for $30 – one hundred times cheaper than Microsoft Hololens. Make sure you check out the video to see what it can do.

Bixi

Bixi is a multi-functional sensor that can understand different hand gestures made in front of it. We talked a bit about air gestures last week with Google’s upcoming Project Soli, and Bixi looks like it might be along the same lines.

Could this be the big technology to look out for in 2017? Only time will tell.
