8 apps you need for Cardboard or Goji VR

A roundup of the best of virtual reality

Virtual reality is not only widely available now, but also totally affordable. And if you’ve got your hands on a Cardboard headset, or Goji’s plastic mask, you’ll no doubt be ready for some immersive VR experiences.

We’ve crawled the internet to find out what the experts suggest you download. Here are our findings…

Film

YouTube

Experience YouTube’s 360 content without having to scroll around your mobile or desktop screen. From shark dives to extreme sports, it’s all more realistic when you’re part of it.

Star Wars VR

Any Star Wars fan will love this app. You’re a secret agent on the desert world of Jakku, as featured in Episode VII – The Force Awakens. With a guest appearance from lovable droid, BB-8, it’s a fun insight to the Jedi world.

Gaming

Google Cardboard

It would seem unjust not to mention the flagship app from Google. It’s the perfect place to start with VR, and a brief introduction to how things work in the virtual world. Fly with seagulls, plant flowers, and fish in artic waters alongside giants of the deep.

Chair In A Room

In this short horror experience, you’re alone in a dark room with a rather temperamental torch. Its short battery life only last a few seconds before needing to recharge – leaving you in the dark. And when the darkness takes over, things go a little awry.

Experiential

Google Street View

Go virtually anywhere in the world with Google Street View in VR. Just tap the Cardboard icon in the top right of the screen to be transported to your location of choice. And all you have to do to soak in the natural beauty is turn your head.

Within (formerly VRSE)

Chris Milk’s catalogue of apps are all available through Within, giving you the opportunity to watch fascinating digital shorts as well as gripping documentaries from world-renowned publications and journalists.

Music

Bohemian Rhapsody

If you love Queen, you need to check out this app. Experience one of the band’s most legendry songs like never before as you travel through the weird and wonderful mind of one of the UK’s greatest acts.

Squarepusher, Stor Eiglass

And if you’re in more of an electronic mood, Stor Eiglass’ short musical story throws you into a peculiar VR journey.

How do I get apps on my Google Cardboard/Goji VR headset?

The first thing you need to do is download the Google Cardboard app. It'll give you a brief rundown of how everything works, and from there you can get further apps through the Play Store like normal.
