5 hidden iOS 10 features

Get more from your iPhone

The tenth version of Apple’s operating system (iOS 10) was released alongside iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, with some major new upgrades that you can read about here.

Since then, we’ve unearthed a few more useful (and handy) features. They might not have hit the headlines, but we like them a lot. So without further ado, here they are – our five hidden iOS 10 gems.

Turn your camera into a magnifying glass

Have you ever tried to read a piece of small print by zooming in with your iPhone’s camera? If so, we salute your ingenuity - but you really don’t need to do that any more with iOS 10.

Go to your iPhone’s Settings > General > Accessibility > Magnifier, and set the toggle to ‘On’. You’ll then be able to triple-tap your Home button to open the camera with adjustable magnification. A magnifying glass, in other words.

Change your flashlight’s brightness

The iPhone 7 flashlight is a thing of illuminating beauty. But if it’s too bright for your needs, you can now change its settings. Go to the Control Centre, and force press (in other words, press down firmly) the flashlight icon. This gives you access to three light settings: Low Light, Medium Light, or Bright Light.

Locate your parked car

Has it ever taken you so long to find your way out of Ikea that you couldn't remember where you parked your car? It's happened to the best of us. But now you should be able to find it easily – just as long as your iPhone is hooked up to your car’s Bluetooth or Apple CarPlay.

iOS 10 will detect when you've exited the car, and put a 'Parked Car' alert on your lock screen, with the option to get directions to it.

Read your voicemails

iOS 10 brings you a new and improved way of receiving messages. You can now read your voicemails rather than just listening to them.

Your iPhone will automatically transcribe all of the voicemail messages you receive. So just wait a few minutes to let it work it’s magic, and then tap on the voicemail in question. It’ll then expand and show the full transcript in plain English.

Get rid of unwanted clutter

To round off our list off hidden iOS 10 features, we’ve got a few different ones that have a common goal in mind – to get rid of the things you don’t need.

  • If there are any preloaded stock apps you know you’ll never use, you can force press on them and tap the ‘x’ icon to remove them.
  • If you’ve got lots of open Safari tabs, you can now get rid of them without having to swipe through and close every single one. Go to the new tab page, and force press ‘Done’. This gives you a menu with the option to close all your tabs.
  • And if you’ve got a lot of needless notifications piling up on your lock screen, you can get rid of them too. Simply force press the ‘x’ icon and select ‘Clear All Notifications’.

If you've found some impressive iOS 10 features that we haven't mentioned above, we'd love to hear them. Drop us a line below and share your discoveries.
