Google Trips is your new personal tour guide

Planning a holiday is easier than it was a few years ago. Thanks to the wonders of the World Wide Web, we can now basically do it all online.

But it can still be a headache. Working out a suitable schedule of touristy things to do and places to eat can be a bit hit and miss if you haven’t got local knowledge. And finding all those travel tickets, car hire confirmations and hotel reservations can sometimes be a hassle too.

But worry no longer, dear traveller. Google Trips (free on Android and iOS) is a new app that promises to help take the pain out of planning a holiday or city break. It’s packed with in-depth information on the top 200 cities in the world, and it’s been designed to work offline. So you can download everything you need (including maps and walking directions) onto your phone before you leave on your travels.

Let’s take a closer look at exactly what Google Trips has to offer…

Your travel documents, all in one place

From the moment you book your holiday, Google Trips gets busy. It automatically collects all your travel tickets, booking confirmations and hotel reservations from your Gmail inbox, and stores everything in a ‘Reservations’ folder. So all your important documents are together in one place, and you can get to them even when you’re offline.

Let Google Trips plan your day

Based on your destination and travel dates, Google Trips will automatically create a ‘Trip’ folder for you. When you tap into it, you’ll see lots of options: Food & Drink, Getting around, Things you need to know, Things to do, and Day plans.

Choose Day plans, and you’ll be able to browse through lots of half-day and full-day tourist walks. These are based on historic visits by other travellers, and curated by Google’s editorial team. Along with the most popular attractions, there are some real hidden gems to discover.

Create your own daily adventure

You don’t have to go along with one of Google’s recommended excursions. You can also plan your day based on places you definitely want to visit.

Simply add a location you intend to visit to your travel plan, and say how much time you’ve got available. Based on this, Google Trips will come up with other suitable attractions near your chosen spot.

A few final thoughts on Google Trips…

Google Trips sounds like it's going to be a great addition to the world of travel apps. Download it on your phone and along with Google Translate, you’ve got pretty much everything you need for your next holiday.

And if the official advert is anything to go by, you’ll have a massive grin on your face whenever you use it.

What do you think? Will you be making Google Trips a trusted travel companion? Or are you happier doing your own thing abroad, and trusting your instincts? Drop us a comment below.
