What is Google's Project Tango?

How will Project Tango change how we use smartphones?

Google’s been hard at work developing an augmented reality (AR) mobile technology currently called Project Tango, and now it's ready. And it's set to be the next stage in smartphone evolution. While we’re starting to see the likes of virtual and augmented reality spread its wings with VR headsets, Project Tango is taking a slightly different tact.

How does it work?

By using the phone’s camera and special sensors (look out for the ASUS Zenfone AR, coming to Carphone Warehouse soon), you’ll be able to immerse yourself in augmented reality in a 3D space. This means that you’ll not only be able to see images laid over a real life environment, but you’ll be able to move around them, too.

The practical applications

Think furniture shopping. You find a new bed online, but you’re not sure how it’s going to look in your bedroom next to all your other stuff. Enter Tango, which scans your room and the available space, then inserts the new bed into position – kind of like this:

The other big role for 3D mobile tech could be education. Students will be able to dive head first into subjects they would otherwise have to read or watch, providing a much more in depth level of understanding. Imagine a biology class brought to life with augmented reality. You wouldn’t need to dissect that poor frog any more – the world of mixed reality would do it for you.
