CES 2017: What to expect

Lots of TVs

Given its name, it's no surprise that CES is centred around consumer electronics. We're expecting lots of big-screen tellies at the 2017 show from the likes of Samung, LG and Sony. Tech Radar says: "LG will tout its OLED screens, Samsung will talk up SUHD and Sony will likely have something to say about Android TV and OLED, if the latest rumors are correct.

"Expect the typical 4K TV reveals, though we could easily see displays pushing 8K and beyond ... Beyond pixel count, the big TV talk at CES 2017 will likely surround High Dynamic Range (HDR), and particularly how the Dolby Vision format stacks up against HDR10."

Bluetooth 5

Bluetooth 5 is the latest iteration of the wireless technology, and the update will let us all do more than ever. Get ready for longer ranges, faster speeds and larger broadcast message capacity – letting it work better with the ever-evolving Internet of Things (IoT).

Executive director of Bluetooth SIG, Mark Powell, said: “Bluetooth is revolutionizing how people experience the IoT. Bluetooth 5 continues to drive this revolution by delivering reliable IoT connections and mobilizing the adoption of beacons, which in turn will decrease connection barriers and enable a seamless IoT experience.”

Products should be available with Bluetooth 5 in around six months, but we’ll see much more at CES.

VR continues its reign

VR landed at CES last year in the form of HTC Vive, and since we've seen PlayStation VR launch as well as a consumer-ready version of Oculus Rift. So what more can there be? The hardwear might be coming thick and fast, but there's still a lot of space for original content. We're expecting lots of new virtual reality games and experiences in January, and hopefully a bit more information on Microsoft's new low-cost mobile-powered heasets.

Following annoncement in October (below), it's time for some more answers.

We'll be reporting live from CES right here and on our sister company's blog site, Tech Talk. If you have any questions, drop us a comment below.
