Sony Xperia Z2 vs Sony Xperia Z1

After much anticipation, Sony has finally lifted the lid on the Sony Xperia Z2. With a new screen, new speakers and new camera software, the phone looks like an impressive upgrade. But how does it perform against its predecessor, the Sony Xperia Z1?

Screen quality

Sony’s screens are always packed with technology taken from the Japanese company’s TV department and the Xperia Z2 is no different. It has the same TRILUMINOS and X-Reality wizardry as the Xperia Z1 to help perfect picture quality, but the colours and brightness have been dramatically improved. That means the new 5.2” Full HD panel looks much sharper. So whether you’re playing a game, reading a book or watching a movie, it’ll look better on the Xperia Z2.

Having a top notch screen is really important when you have a camera as good as Sony’s. The one in the Xperia Z2 is the same as the 20.7MP unit in the Xperia Z1, but it has some new software that brings new video features and makes photos ever sharper. While the Z1 could record great Full HD movies, the Z2 has gone a step further with support for Ultra HD recording that’s 4 times sharper. There’s also a new Timeshift Video mode that lets you create cool slow motion moments in your videos. The new software has added some great improvements to this already amazing camera.

Sound quality

Getting great sound quality from a phone has always been a challenge as there’s not much room for speakers. The Xperia Z1 managed to make impressive sounds from a single speaker, but the Xperia Z2 has managed to squeeze in dual speakers to make your movies and music sound even better. The Z2 is also the first phone in the world to have digital noise cancellation built in. That means you get better sound quality from the relatively light earphones that come with the phone. All of this means that the Xperia Z2 is probably the best flagship phone for music lovers.

Amazingly, the new Xperia Z2 has been made faster than the Xperia Z1 too. It has a newer processor which runs fractionally faster and RAM has been upped from 2GB to 3GB to make multitasking smoother. This is all teamed up with the latest Android 4.4.2 KitKat operating system, which makes the biggest difference to the speed. We have always thought the Xperia Z1 is a supremely fast smartphone, but the Z2 manages to be even quicker and that’ll help with multitasking and gaming.
