Google Chromecast has taken off all over the world. But what exactly is it and how much can it do? Carphone Warehouse takes a look at this exceptional value streaming dongle.
What is Google Chromecast?
Chromecast is a small device that plugs into your TV’s HDMI port. You can then send, or cast, things to it from your smartphone, tablet or computer over Wi-Fi. That means you can watch a YouTube video or Netflix movie on your TV without needing to invest in an expensive smart TV.
What can Google Chromecast do?
Connect to your smartphone or tablet
If you’ve got an Android phone or tablet, you might be able to cast everything you do on your device to your TV with Chromecast. Check the list of device that support Cast Screen here.
If your phone’s not on that list, or you have an Apple or Windows Phone device, you can still send a lot of great apps to Chromecast. You can watch videos through YouTube or Netflix, or play music with Google Play Music. Just search for Chromecast in your app store for everything with Chromecast support.
Connect to your computer
On a computer, you can send anything you do in Google’s Chrome web browser to Chromecast by downloading the Chromecast plugin. That’s fantastic because Chrome can open movies and photos that are stored on your computer. So you can cast all your home videos to your TV as well as anything on the internet.
