Sony SmartWatch 3 review

WE STRAP ON THE SPORTY PERSON’S SMARTWATCH

The Sony SmartWatch 3 makes checking notifications on your phone easier and faster. It’s also got a really strong battery, meaning you’ll get over two days on a single charge, which makes it one of the best of the current crop of smartwatches.

THE BEST BITS

  • Light and small with a good screen size
  • Impressive screen with a handy power saver mode
  • Waterproof to a depth of 1.5 metres
  • Long battery life of two days +
  • Built in GPS for accurate tracking without a smartphone

The Sony SmartWatch 3 isn’t just great for making sure you don’t miss notifications from your smartwatch. It’s waterproof, has a built in pedometer and links to a special fitness app, so for fitness and sports, it’s brilliant.

IMPRESSIVE SCREEN THAT’S GOOD ON POWER SAVING

For a small screen, we’re really impressed with it. It’s bright enough to be read on sunny days, and writing is clear. Those of you with weaker eyesight might struggle a bit to read emails and texts though. The real standout is the power saving technology. After a few seconds the screen dims right down, but is still readable in daylight. It’s useful, and uses less power than competitor watches in their power saving modes.

GREAT BATTERY LIFE OF OVER TWO DAYS

When compared against the smartwatches from other big manufacturers, the SmartWatch 3 is a big winner in battery life. Using it normally for notifications and a few other apps, we were getting over two days of battery life. This might stretch to three if you’re a light user, but no matter how you’re using it, the Sony won’t let you down and run out of power. It’s also easy to charge, without any fancy chargers. Just plug in your normal microUSB charger.

WATERPROOF AND BUILT IN GPS

This is the most waterproof smartwatch out right now. It is certified to IP68, which means it’ll go under 1.5 metres of water for half an hour without any problems. Just make sure to keep the USB port cover closed. It also has a built in GPS. While the Android Wear software doesn’t support it yet, an update in a couple of months will sort it. When it comes, the watch will be able to pinpoint exactly where you are for accurate tracking when running, cycling and more.

THE DOWNSIDES

The main thing with the Android Wear smartwatches is that a few of the features can’t be used because we’re waiting on software updates. The GPS in the SmartWatch 3 can’t be turned on for example. Updates are due in late October and at the beginning of the 2015 though, which will give Android Wear more features. We’d also like the watch to have a speaker for listening to music or making a quick call, and a built in keyboard for replying to texts.

OUR VERDICT

Comfortable and lightweight, this is one of the most practical smartwatches around, especially when the long battery life and high waterproof rating are considered. If you can wait a little longer for some new software and don’t intend to make calls on your watch, this is brilliant for sports and keeping up with your notifications.
