Samsung Galaxy S5 vs Samsung Galaxy S4

The Samsung Galaxy S5 is here! This incredibly advanced smartphone has been surrounded in hype and rumours for months and now we finally know all about it. So how does it compare to last year’s Galaxy S4? We’ve answered some of your questions to help you decide if the Galaxy S5 is the phone for you.

IS THE FINGERPRINT SCANNER REALLY EASIER AND MORE SECURE THAN THE OLD TYPES OF SCREEN LOCK?

We love the new fingerprint scanner. It takes a minute or two to set up but it’s really accurate and is much faster than using a password. It’s super secure too. Samsung’s system is extremely hard to get around so you won’t have to worry about your data if you ever lose your phone, or if your friends get hold of it.

Samsung has also teamed up with PayPal so you can use your fingerprint to make secure payments instantly. We should see more apps making use of the scanner too, so you might have the option to sign into Facebook with the swipe of a finger soon.

IS THE NEW S HEALTH WITH THE HEART RATE MONITOR THAT MUCH BETTER?

The new app’s great. It looks much nicer and is a lot easier to use. But the chances are it’ll come to the Galaxy S4 as a software update. So the big difference is the heart rate monitor. It works really well and is extremely handy to see if you’re pushing yourself hard enough when you’re working out. And it’ll store your heart rates on a graph, which can really help you monitor your general health over time.

IS THE SCREEN QUALITY BETTER ON THE SAMSUNG GALAXY S5?

The improvement to the screen really surprised us. On paper both seem to use similar screens but the Galaxy S5 looks sharper, more colourful, brighter and easier to read in sunlight. It’s even got the dimmest setting for a screen on a smartphone, which is handy if you like to read in bed in low light as it doesn’t strain your eyes as much.

IS BATTERY LIFE A LOT BETTER ON THE GALAXY S5?

From our early testing, it seems to be great. It’s a decent improvement over the Galaxy S4 and with the new Ultra Power Saving Mode, you should never run out of juice in an emergency.

DO YOU REALLY NOTICE THE FASTER AUTOFOCUS ON THE CAMERA?

You definitely notice that the new camera is really fast and a lot of that speed comes from the new autofocus. It can focus as quickly as you can blink, so taking a quick snap is almost instant.

DO THE EXTRA MEGAPIXELS AND NEW TYPE OF IMAGE SENSOR HAVE A BIG IMPACT ON CAMERA QUALITY?

Yes. The photos we’ve taken with the Galaxy S5 look amazing. The 16MP pictures are pin sharp and Samsung’s unique new type of image sensor helps them look brighter and gives even better colours. We loved the Galaxy S4′s camera last year, but the Galaxy S5′s new image sensor has improved what was already great.

IF THE GALAXY S5 IS ONLY WATER RESISTANT, IS IT REALLY A BIG IMPROVEMENT OVER THE GALAXY S4?

The Galaxy S5 will stand up to typical encounters with liquids, like using it in the rain or spilling a drink on it, and can even be dunked in water. The Galaxy S4 wasn’t designed to have any contact with liquids, but the Galaxy S5 has been independently tested and rated as IP67. That means it can be submerged in up to a metre of fresh water for up to half an hour and still work.

IS THE GALAXY S5 A LOT FASTER?

The Galaxy S5 has a new processor, which is a massive 30 per cent faster than the one in the Galaxy S4. There’s also the new Android 4.4 KitKat software to make things run even more smoothly. So even if you’re just scrolling through the settings, you can feel that the phone’s faster. And when it comes to gaming or watching HD movies, that extra speed really helps.

DOES THE DOWNLOAD BOOSTER MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE TO DOWNLOAD TIMES IN THE REAL WORLD?

It seems to be nearly twice as fast as when you download with just your 4G or just your Wi-Fi. The only word of warning would be to keep an eye on how much of your 4G data you’re using. With the added speed you could accidentally get through a lot of it in a short space of time.
